Canadian Securities Institute (CSI)

CSI designations & certificates represent prestigious credentials that allow financial advisors to prosper. As a true measure of expertise, CSI designations are the recognized benchmark for regulatory authorities, financial organizations and associations in Canada and around the globe.

They offer the popular Canadian Securities Course (CSC) and the Conduct and Practices Handbook (CPH), two basic requirements for many financial services careers. The CSI also offers courses for the following certifications:
- Canadian Investment Manager (CIM)
- Derivative Market Specialist (DMS)
- Financial Management Advisor (FMA)
- Fellowship of CSI (FCSI)

Financial Services

Certified Financial Planner (CFP) of FPSC

The Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation is a professional certification mark for financial planners conferred by the Financial Planners Standards Council (FPSC) in Canada. To receive authorization to use the designation, the candidate must meet continuing education, examination, experience and ethics requirements, and pay an ongoing certification fee.

Personal Financial Planner (PFP) Certificate:

Another option for individuals in writing the CFP exam is get the PFP certificate from a University or CSI. This, along with the completion of the CSC, qualifies the individual to take the CFP.

Investment Management and Financial Analysis

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) of CFAI

CFA Institute

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is an international professional certification offered by the CFA Institute (CFAI). To become a CFA Charterholder candidates must pass each of three six-hour exams, possess a bachelor’s degree (or equivalent, as assessed by CFA institute) and have 48 months of qualified, professional work experience. CFA charterholders are also obligated to adhere to a strict Code of Ethics and Standards governing their professional conduct.

While there are no Undergraduate requirements to take the CFA exams, the following finances courses have been recommended to help prepare:

Risk Management

Financial Risk Manager (FRM) of GARP

The Financial Risk Manager (FRM®) certification is the globally recognized benchmark and professional designation for financial risk managers. If you are in financial risk management, or considering a career in it, then earning the FRM designation is the natural next step.

In order to be certified as a Financial Risk Manager (FRM®) the following is required:

- A passing score on both Part I and Part II of the FRM Examination

- A minimum of two years professional full-time work experience in the area of financial risk management or another related field including, but not limited to, trading, portfolio management, faculty academic, industry research, economics, auditing, risk consulting, and/or risk technology.

Professional Risk Manager (PRM) of PRMIA

The Professional Risk Manager (PRM™) designation is an independent validation of skills and commitment to the highest standard of professionalism, integrity, and best practices within the risk management profession. The PRM™ is the leading certification for risk managers, having received public endorsements from top university programs and businesses.

Candidates are required to pass four exams to achieve the PRM designation.

Associate PRM by PRMIA

The Associate Professional Risk Manager (Associate PRM) is a new PRMIA certificate program intended for staff entering the risk management profession, or those who interface with risk management disciplines on a regular basis, such as auditing, accounting, legal, and systems development personnel who want to understand fundamental risk management methods and practices.

Designed to be mathematically and theoretically less detailed than the Professional Risk Manager (PRM) certification, the new program will cover the core concepts allowing non-specialists to interpret risk management information and reports, make critical assessments and evaluate the implications and the limitations of such results.

Only successful candidates of the PRM designation are entitled to use the PRM title. Associate PRM members will receive a certificate but will not be entitled to use the PRM title.
